An old fable recounts of a spring who lived peacefully and securely inward a pen for the preponderance of his life. Even though he could hear many sounds emanating from outside, he spent his entire life believing that everything outside his environment inside the pen was terrible. Simply contemplating the prospect of leaving his pen made him so terrified that he was perfectly prepared to spend the rest of his life tamping and expanding himself repeatedly inside that tiny place.

When the ink ran out, the pen's owner was busy changing it when an accident occurred. Out of sight, the spring hurled into the toilet drain. The frightened spring was drained through the pipe after pipe, bemoaning his terrible fate each time. He did not attempt to open his eyes for the entire voyage. He never stopped crying. The waves swept him away, and he landed up in a river. When the river rush was over and the spring saw that things were calming down, he stopped sobbing and listened. Birdsong and wind in the trees encouraged him to open his eyes. The spring saw the river's clear, pure waters, the lush green riverbed rocks, and a rainbow of fish whose skin seemed to dance in the sunlight. Now he realized that the world was more significant than the pen and that there was always more to see and do outdoors.

After a while with the fish, he proceeded to the riverbank, then to a flower field. He heard sobs. He chased the sound to a gorgeous flower squashed by a rabbit and unable to stand straight. The spring realized he could assist the flower and volunteered his assistance. The flower accepted and glided into spring. They lived happily there. The spring used to believe that all there was to life was being a lonely and terrifying spring.

This story exemplifies the importance of adaptability and flexibility in one's daily life. It seems unlikely that the spring will ever find happiness if he continues to be depressed and sympathetic toward his predicament. Likewise, If we, Human beings, learn to be adaptable and flexible in the face of any challenging situation in our lives, we will almost certainly be successful in our endeavors.
